Maybe it's problems identifying?

[08:03] so I'm identifying, and doing it properly- but after I identify, I get this message:
[08:04] [08:02] ->> Sending Nickserv Password
[08:04] [08:02] -> *nickserv* IDENTIFY [password]
[08:04] [08:02] --NickServ-- please choose a different nick.
[08:04] [08:02] ->> Your mode is now +r
[08:04] so it's taking the identify- but then asking me to change nick?

Any ideas??

When you login under a registered nickname, the server shows this message:

-NickServ- This nickname is registered and protected.  If it is your
-NickServ- nick, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password.  Otherwise,
-NickServ- please choose a different nick.
-NickServ- If you do not change within one minute, I will change your nick.

Mode +r indicates that NickServ accepted your password and identified your nickname. Notice the line I highlighted above. It's the same line you saw after identifying to NickServ. I believe the problem here was lag with your client (or maybe the server). NickServ wasn't finished displaying it's normal "reserved nick" message while you were identifying. It just happened to finish after you were done identifying.

This doesn't appear to be a problem. As long as you can identify and are recognized by channels, all should be fine.
