Testing New IRCD Software (Phase II)

Post by Legend » Tue Jul 06, 2010 12:12 am

Hello everybody,

The developers of our current IRCD software have slowed production to a point where the project is being neglected. We feel it's in the best interest of Chat Solutions to move to a software with ongoing development. After careful deliberation, we've chosen InspIRCD.

We need your help to complete testing! The test server can be accessed via demo.chat-solutions.org (port 6667). SSL is enabled on port 6697. You shouldn't notice very much change. I've tried to keep the configuration identical to our current setup to minimize the learning curve; however, I'm pleased to announce there will be a few NEW features available. Please let me know about any bugs, missing features, or irregularities that you encounter. Message me here on the board or drop by #help. Exploits should be reported in a private medium.

I'm planning for the new software to go live in the early morning hours (PST) of Saturday, July 17th. The migration will be staggered to minimize disruption, but please expect at least one disconnection as the servers are rebooted.

If you're technically inclined and want to learn more about the software, see the InspIRCD User Manual. This documentation is mainly intended for IRC Administrators, but some of it may prove useful for end users.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this software migration.

Thank you all for your continued dedication to Chat Solutions!

CHANGES TO BE AWARE OF:
- All of your channel and nick settings should remain in tact. No changes here. :-)
- New server in Paris, France will provide better connectivity for European users.
- New extended ban types (j, r, N, C, p, T, R, M, and Q) provide greater flexibility in banning users. See /HELPOP EXTBANS for details.
- New command for message flood protection: /mode #channel +f
[*][lines]:[sec]. See http://wiki.inspircd.org/Modules/messageflood for details.
- New command for filtering/blocking strings on a per-channel basis: /mode #channel +g <bad phrase here> (not to be confused with +G, which is managed at the server level). See http://wiki.inspircd.org/Modules/chanfilter for details.[/color]

FAQ:
Q: Some of my channel modes didn't carry over. For example, the channel used to be [+cfjnrst]. Now it's [+cnrst].
A: The modes that didn't carry over in this example (+f and +j) are missing from MLOCK, so the new server doesn't enable them upon join. To fix this, you may either (a.) set the missing modes in MLOCK on the old platform before July 17th, or (b.) manually set the missing modes after the migration on July 17th. Either way works. If you need to reactivate +f, please hold off until the migration is finished because that mode has a different syntax on the new platform. If you need assistance configuring MLOCK, please join #help.

Q: The old +c bans color, but the new +c bans color, bold and underline. Is there any way to ban ONLY color?
A: The new +c is designed differently. To ban color, we must use the "filter" module. The command is /mode #channel +g ** (Important: Between the asterisks is a control character that you cannot see. To generate this control character in mIRC, type Ctrl + k between the asterisks, just like you would begin any color. What you're doing is blocking the control character that provides color.)
